Waterloo Region Red Zone - Changes to Hockey Programming
Submitted By Matthew Broga on Saturday, November 21, 2020
The Waterloo Region has entered the COVID Red - Control Zone as part of the provinces COVID-19 response framework. This change will impact our programming. HMHA will transition all programming as of Monday November 23rd for the next 14 days. HMHA will monitor and discuss continuation of this programming change over the two week period and adjust as necessary.

Continuing programming that is safe for our youth members is our primary objective.

COVID Red Programming Requirements:

  • 9 players + 1 Coach New Update: 10 players + 1 coach + 1 trainer maximum allowed on the ice, including the bench area.
  • 1 parent/guardian per player in the designated spectator area. NEW UPDATE: PROVINCE AND CITY IS ALLOWING 1 PARENT/GUARDIAN IN DESIGNATED VIEWING AREA

Impact to HMHA Programming:

  • 1 ice time of 50 minutes per week per team. There are two reasons for this;

a) we have a limit to our available ice block and we are unable to increase it at this time,

b) we set our financial budget based on two teams per ice session and therefore would be unable to buy additional ice without additional fees.

  • Teams have been rostered with 10 players based on the Phase 3 of Hockey Canada's Return to Safe Play guidelines. Therefore, players will be required to sit out each session on a rotation. This path has been chosen for the following reasons;

a) expanding the number of teams will required more coaches
b) the required additional teams would exceed our allotted ice block even with the reduction to 1 session per week

  • To make this work, we are asking for our members to be understanding and flexible. This isn't an ideal situation, but with good communication between parents and coaches, coaches and conveners, we believe we can make this work.
  • On ice programming will be focused on individual skill development and will accommodate physical distancing.

a) no games or scrimmages
b) no scrums within a drill

  • Fees remain unchanged

a) there is no change to ice rental costs

b) there is no change to insurance fees

We understand this is a major disruption. We feel that it is important to do our best to continue to offer safe programming for the overall physical and mental health and wellness of our members.

We understand there may be many questions. Please submit your questions or concerns to [email protected]. We will work to produce an FAQ over the next few days.

Thank you for your patience. Please stay tuned for updates as we work to adjust to the new restrictions.
