Midgets take first place in Caledonia Challenge
The Hespeler Midget A’s ended a four year absence at the Caledonia Challenge Cup Tournament, repeating this
weekend as champions with a 1-0 overtime win over Dorchester in this past Sunday’s Final.
Preliminary round robin wins came against the host Caledonia team by a score of 4-0, 2-0 over Niagara-On-The
-Lake, and an 8-3 victory against the short handed Parry Sound Shamrocks 8-3. A goal given up with 1 second
left in their early game with Dorchester resulted in a 1-1 tie and prevented a clean sweep for the Shammies.
After a penalty-filled opening game with Caledonia, the Midgets re-focused and spent just 14 minutes
shorthanded in their final four games.
Tournament MVP was Braydon Gartley with 5 goals (including 3 game winners). Jacob Lewis and Gartley both
tallied six points on the weekend, with four from Ryan Meisner, and a hat trick from Austin Slaney in the
‘Battle of the Shamrocks’. Ryan Hall and Noah Robbins-Driussi were both standouts with three shutouts over
the weekend, and only the four goals given up.
The Midgets now resume their regular season schedule on the 21st with home and home games with the
Elmira Jr. Sugar Kings, starting in Hespeler on Friday night.
