PrintInitiation - Cross Ice Program

HMHA Cross Ice Initiation Program (IP)

Who is it for and what does it Consist of?

  • This is a Hockey Program for the 4, 5, & 6 year old age group.
  • The program follows the OMHA recommendations for ages below Novice.
  • The program is known as the "Cross Ice IP" program (see below) consisting of skating skills development and hockey stick/puck skills development.
  • Your child does not need to be a strong skater to join this program. However, it is recommended that your child has some basic skating experience and be able to get up move forward (even slowly) on their skates.

There are 2 IP divisions and all children will be in a division that is appropriate to their level.

  1. Cross Ice IP 4&5 (2013-2014 birth year)
  2. Cross Ice IP 6 (2012 birth year)

Skill level will be determined by on-ice evaluations to be held in September before the season starts.  Evaluation Schedules

As is the case for all teams sanctioned by Hockey Canada our Initiation program is focused on fundamental skating and hockey skills.

On Saturday mornings, the program will be led by the IP Convenor and the Coaches of the IP program following the Hockey Canada Curriculum using a station based format.

  1. Develops fundamental skating and puck handling skills, and

  2. Guides/trains coaches on leading practices to develop fundamental hockey skills

This part of the program is designed to develop fundamental skating and puck handling skills for young hockey players as well as develop and organize the coaching skills of the Coaches as a guide to lead team practices through the entire season. This helps develop the newer Coaches as well as providing lesson plans and exercises that will be valuable for many years of coaching.

On Sundays, Coaches will lead their teams in one hour sessions.

  1. During the first 6-8 weeks of the season coaches will lead their teams using organized OMHA based lesson plans for stick, puck, and skating development,

  2. After the first 6-8 weeks the teams will play cross ice hockey games following the OMHA cross ice game play guidelines

As per the OMHA mandate in 2014, all parents must complete the Parent Respect in Sport online course in order for their child to be on an approved roster.  This is a one-time only requirement and only one parent needs to complete the course.

You will need to attach the completed course info to your child(ren)'s profile in the "Child Management" section of the program.  Please do not forget to do this and to enter the correct Association as "Hespeler Minor Hockey Association".
