HMHA Tyke Half-Ice Program


Who is it for and what does it Consist of?

  • This is a Hockey Program for the 7 year old age group.
  • The program follows the OMHA recommendations for ages below Novice.
  • The program is known as the "Tyke Half Ice" program (see below) consisting of skating skills development and hockey stick/puck skills development and half ice games.

Format


As is the case for all teams sanctioned by Hockey Canada, this is the first year where half ice games are mandated for this age group.


On Friday evenings, the program will be led by the Tyke Convenor and the Coaches of the Tyke program following the Hockey Canada Curriculum using a station based format.

  1. Develops fundamental skating and puck handling skills, and

  2. Guides/trains coaches on leading practices to develop fundamental hockey skills

This part of the program is designed to develop fundamental skating and puck handling skills for young hockey players as well as develop and organize the coaching skills of the Coaches as a guide to lead team practices through the entire season. This helps develop the newer Coaches as well as providing lesson plans and exercises that will be valuable for many years of coaching.

On Sundays, Coaches will lead their teams in one hour sessions. 

  1. During the first 6-8 weeks of the season coaches will lead their teams using organized OMHA based lesson plans for stick, puck, and skating development,

  2. After the first 6-8 weeks the teams will play half ice hockey games following the OMHA half ice game play guidelines

    • 4 on 4 plus a goalie

    • 22 minute halves

Parent Respect in Sport Course Mandate

 

As per the OMHA mandate in 2014, all parents must complete the Parent Respect in Sport online course in order for their child to be on an approved roster.  This is a one-time only requirement and only one parent needs to complete the course.  

You will need to attach the completed course info to your child(ren)'s profile in the "Child Management" section of the program.  Please do not forget to do this and to enter the correct Association as "Hespeler Minor Hockey Association".
