MIDGET A’S A CLOSE SECOND IN SILVER STICK QUALIFIER
The Midget A Shamrocks fell ever so short of advancing to
January’s Silver Stick International Finals at a Qualifier Tournament this past
weekend (Nov 27 to 29th) in Midland.
The team lost only their third game of the season in the Tournament Championship by a score of 3-2 in triple overtime to the defending OMHA Midget A Champion Quinte West Hawks from Trenton.
The Midgets advanced into the playoff round with a tie and two wins against Huntsville, Midland and Bradford. Sunday morning saw the Shammies put it all together to defeat the defending OMHA BB Champion South Muskoka Bears by a score of 9-1 in the Semi-Final. The Championship game was an even and fast paced affair through 5 periods before the Hawks scored on a power play early in the sixth stanza.
Leading scorers this weekend were Austin Goulart (7), Devin Schneider (4) and Austin Reilly (3), with Aaron Petro and Trevor Wilson tallying 6 points each. Gavin MacLeod recorded a shutout in the Bradford game, and was named Finals MVP for his 27 saves in a losing cause.
On a lighter note, Ryan Meisner (an ‘early scratch’ in the Tournament) has found a future career in sports broadcasting based on his efforts with play-by-play and commentary for the teams’ later games. Look for his audition work on a YouTube channel near you.
The Midgets put their first place 13-1 record in Tri-County League play to the test with a double header in Owen Sound December 5th.
