On Sunday morning the Shamrocks headed to New Hamburg for the final playoff game of the season. The stage was set in dramatic fashion; Win and we would advance to championships, but a loss would mean New Hamburg would advance. Unfortunately, our Shamrocks ran out of steam and the road to the championships came to an abrupt end when we were bested by the Huskies by a score of 3-1. On Saturday afternoon it was the battle of Hespeler at the arena with the winner set to clinch a spot into the Group C Championships. Our Shamrocks opened scoring, but were ultimately unable to hang onto the win and finished with a score of 2-1. Player of the Game was Alternate Captain Jack Dennis. Jack played with a sense of responsibility as heavy on his shoulders as the player of the game medal. He played with pride, heart and unfortunately we came up short. Congratulations Jack. On Tuesday night, our Shamrock’s headed down to Tavistock, to battle the Titans. Tavistock took the early lead, but the Shamrocks netted a goal in each period to skate away with a 3-1 victory. They shut down the league’s top scorer but there were still a number of quality shots our goaltender was left to face. Dominic played with confidence, intensity, and focus. It’s easy to be confident when you have the puck. It is a completely different animal to be confident when you are the last thing standing between an opponent and a desperately needed goal. On Saturday February 8th the Shamrocks hosted the Tavistock Titans for the first time this playoff series. Tavistock opened the scoring, but our Shamrocks were quick to even it up, and took the lead two more times before ultimately skating away tied 3-3. Player of the game was Carter Wall. Carter has been playing in a new role as a defender since the start of playoffs and has settled into his role on the blue line nicely. Hockey is a Canadian tradition. It truly feels part of the identity of what it means to be Canadian, but increasingly, with that comes more teams, more levels, elite status and shiny trophy's. But that's not what makes it special. That's not what makes it hockey. It's the people. The players, the coaches and the volunteers. It's throwing your sticks in a pile at centre ice with strangers and skating away with friends.
